What Does John Most Want You to See?
John most wants you to see not merely that “Jesus is special,” but who Jesus truly is.
He is the Son of God, the Word made flesh. He is the only begotten of the Father. He is the bread of life, the light of the world, the good shepherd, the true vine, the way, the truth, and the life, and the resurrection and the life.
If you do not truly know who He is, it is difficult to understand the meaning of His coming.
At the same time, John wants you to see that true faith does not stop at surface contact. Many people saw signs and heard teaching, but did not truly believe. Others did not understand at first, but later came slowly into genuine confession. This Gospel continually reminds us that what matters most is not how much you have heard, but whether you have truly entrusted yourself to this Lord.
Finally, John tells you that Jesus came not merely to make people more religious, but to bring God Himself to people and to bring eternal life to people. Eternal life is not a distant reward. It is a life relationship that begins now: knowing the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.
About My Connection With Jesus
In the famous vine and branches teaching in chapter 15, Jesus says:
“He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
As I reflect on my devotional life and daily living, am I constantly trying to “hold life together” by my own strength? Or have I learned, like a branch connected to the vine, to remain closely joined to Jesus in everything and draw life from Him?
About Receiving the Living Water
Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman who came to draw water at noon under the heat of the sun and in the brokenness of her relationships. He told her that everyone who drinks the water of this world will thirst again, but whoever drinks the water He gives will never thirst.
In my life, am I also desperately drinking the “well water” the world offers — reputation, consumption, endless entertainment — only to find my heart still restless, anxious, and dry? Am I willing to come to Jesus and receive the living water that truly satisfies the soul?
About Being Restored Like Peter
When I see Peter, who denied the Lord three times, being completely healed and restored by Jesus beside the Sea of Tiberias through three gentle questions — “Lovest thou me?” — am I also deeply comforted?
When I do not dare face God because of my weakness, failure, or shame, do I believe that the Lord full of grace is also preparing a warm fire on the shore for me, waiting for me to experience His healing and renewed commission?
About Living Out the New Commandment to Love One Another
Jesus said:
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
John 13:35
In this age filled with division, argument, and coldness, can my church and my family live out this love that goes beyond self-interest and prejudice, so that people around us may truly see the presence of God through our love?
